大血藤
Da Xue Teng (Pinyin name)
- Aka: Hong Teng, Xue Teng, Huo Xue Teng, Red Vine
- Source: Tu Jing Ben Cao
- English name: Sargentodoxa Stem/vine
- Botanical name: Sargentodoxa cuneata
- Pharmaceutical name: Caulis Sargentodoxae
- Properties: bitter, neutral
- Channels entered: large intestine
- Chinese therapeutic actions: clear heat and eliminate toxins, and dispels stasis and relieves pain.
- Comment: Da Xue Teng and Ji Xue Teng (caulis spatholobi) are sometimes used interchangeably sometimes in China, as both herbs invigorate blood circulation, open channels, and relieve pain. The difference between the two is that Da Xue Teng treats intestinal abscess while Ji Xue Teng invigorates and tonifies the blood. While these two herbs do have some similarities they should not be confused or substituted casually for each other.
